sassy asked:

I went to this site below and it says that California does not have state lottery tax. If I purchased the ticket in VA, I have to claim in VA… So do i pay the VA tax as mentioned below, or do I pay the California tax, which is nothing??

where do you live? That’s what would determine whose tax you pay. You would still have to pay federal taxes, no matter what.

You pay state taxes in the state that you live in. And of course, federal taxes apply no matter where you live.

California does not impose state income tax on winnings from the California Lottery.

You would claim the income on your state taxes wherever you live. Many states exempt state lottery winnings from tax, as long as it’s from the state you live in.

Federal tax would be the same wherever you live.

You would file a return for the state you live AND the state you purchased the ticket in with a credit for taxes paid to the non resident state.
